Background:
All-female fighting games are certainly a niche market in Japan. Pretty Fighter was my first introduction to the genre. Initially I was very impressed with the game and I loved it, until I realized that the playability really stank in the game. Then along comes Super V.G. I never knew this game existed until I stumbled across it in a video game shop in Tokyo's Akihabara electronics district. It was only a thousand yen ($10US), so I decided to get it. I have Advanced V.G. for the Sega Saturn as well. The series dates back to the NEC PC Engine, I have recently learned. Also of interest for anime fans, the anime Variable Geo, complete with lots of nudity from what I understand, has been released by ADV Films in English.

The Game:
The premise to this game is rather odd. Nine waitresses (?!) are pitted against each other in a fighting contest. Weird, huh? Each girl has her own unique fighting abilities and each plays very differently. The game favors a four button setup instead of the Street Fighter II six button setup, and I prefer only four attack buttons. The playability of this game is way better than Pretty Fighter, although it's still not quite as polished as Street Fighter II. At times it seems a bit rigid, but it's still fairly decent.

The Good:
The intro animations for this game are excellent, and this definitely adds to the graphics rating. Each girl is unique with her own fighting style, so none of them are duplicated.

The Bad:
Although the control feels a bit better than Pretty Fighter, it is still lacking a bit in responsiveness.

Overall:
What is a Variable Geo? I don't know. In the end, this is an average, better than mediocre fighting game with a cool animated intro. Advanced V.G. for the Saturn is a bit better, and Buyrite claims that it is the best all-female fighting game. I disagree. My vote for the all-female fighting game is still Asuka 120% Burning Fest for the Saturn.
