Mocha The Dog

March 2007

On Friday, March 9th, I was checking my mail at the mailboxes around the corner from my house after work. I heard a stray dog trotting up behind me and I was relieved to see that she was friendly. I tapped her on her back to say hello, and she continued past me. I called her to me, and it was obvious by her panting that she'd been walking for a long time. The stupid dogs in my neighborhood were barking at her, but this dog wasn't barking back. I invited the dog into my backyard and tried calling the dog pound, but they close at 6pm and I had just missed them. I figured that I would at least take care of the dog over the weekend before taking her to the pound.

I posted some "found dog" signs in my neighborhood, but I had no idea where she had come from. That night as I picked up Mayu from her work, I told her that we will have a guest staying with us for the weekend. When I told her it was a dog and not some deadbeat friend I feel sorry for, she was excited. She's never owned a dog before.

I listed her on pets911.com, and nobody has claimed her. She's a brown dog with a brindle pattern, and she appears to be a mix between a pit bull and a boxer. She's extremely friendly and she never barks at anyone. She's a rather silent dog, actually, and it's a relief because it seems everyone in my neighborhood who has dogs keeps them constantly outside and all they ever do is bark at anybody they see. Since nobody has claimed her, we're keeping her.

Her pattern and coloring reminded me of rocky road ice cream, but it would be too trite and contrived to call her "Rocky." So, since she also looks like mocha swirl ice cream, we decided to call her "Mocha." Which is not very original either, since my sister has a cat named Mocha. I was trying to come up with another name for the dog, but Mayu liked Mocha, so we're naming her "Mocha The Dog" to differentiate her from my sister's cat.
