White Base

January 2007

I was in the midst of airbrushing a Patlabor Ingram model, a ZZ Gundam model, and a Voltron model when my cheap crap airbrush broke. I had to put those projects aside and decided to try hand-painting a model. I found this small White Base model at a pastic model hobby store I'd never been to. It was a small shop with a large Tamiya poster in the window, so I decided to check it out. Not much at all in terms of sci-fi models, but there on the table was a collection some customer had sold to the owner. This small White Base model was on the top of the pile and only cost me a few dollars.

Unlike most other Gundam models, this is a model that certainly requires glue. This was my first attempt at completely hand-paiting a model, so I anticipated it not turning out very well. I painted it all in gloss enamel paints and didn't do anything fancy with it at all. Here is the result. Major lesson learned: when totally hand-painting the entire surface of such a model, it is important to prime the surface. The paint was more difficult to control on a slicker surface of the plastic right out of the box.
