Narcissus

November 2005

Originally by Halcyon, this model has fortunately been re-released by a Japanese company named Skynet. I first saw this rereleased model on my trip to Los Angeles in August 2005, first at a cool but overpriced toy shop in Santa Monica (they had a blue Max Valkyrie statue about as tall as I am!), and again the next day in City Walk next door to Universal Studios in Hollywood. Both places were asking as much as you would get the original 1986 model on eBay. Yikes! Fortunately, I restrained myself of an impusle buy, came home and bought this on eBay for about half the price.

The Narcissus is my favorite ship from the Alien series. Yes, even more than the Sulaco. I just love this shuttle. But yes, the nose of this model is just as bad as the rumors say. But other than that, it really wasn't so bad to put together. I painted dark gray into all the cracks and wiped off the excess with a paper towel soaked in thinner, leaving only the paint in the cracks for detail. I really wish I knew about Gundam markers in November of 2005 when I built this model, because it would have made this a lot easier. I did not bother detailing anything inside the cockpit because the windows are so dark anyway that it wouldn't have made a difference. I wish I didn't bother putting on the red "EI" decals on the ship, because the Narcissus didn't have this in the movie anyway.

UPDATE 2014

I revisited this model in 2014, using a decal softener on the decals, redoing the panel lines, and spraying a coat of flat Mr. Hobby Topcoat. It is amazing how simply applying a flat coat will give bare plastic a finished, painted look. Here are some better pictures of this model.
