Ajisai to Shounan/Hydrangea and Boy by Seiji Fujishiro.
Taking photos in the museum is forbidden, but since I love this work so much and have made it my avatar, I took this picture anyway.

Shousenkyou in Kofu, Yamanashi-ken

August 2014

Aside from some nasty rain, the weather this August has not been too bad. This summer has not been too hot at all. That's what is nice about living in Shizuoka Prefecture. Well, before I have to return to teaching regular classes, we took a family trip to Shousenkyou in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. We haven't been there in many years, and we wanted to visit the Seiji Fujishiro gallery at the Kage-e No Mori ("Forest of Shadow Art") Art Museum in Shousenkyou. Shousenkyou is a place up in the mountains, and it is nice and cool in the summer. I won't go into too much detail about the museum, but please look at the essay I wrote introducing Seiji Fujishiro several years ago.

Shousenkyou has some very particular rock formations. Its geography makes you feel like you have stepped into an ukyou-e by Hiroshige or something. The place is also home to some magnificent waterfalls. The area sort of reminds me of Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona, Arizona. Maybe it's just because I've been here in Japan for nearly 3 years without visiting my dad, so I'm just getting a bit nostalgic for my home state. There are some similarities, like with the river cutting through the canyon, the large rocks in the water causing rapids, and the fact that it's a nice, cool getaway from the summer heat. There's a nice walking path from the place we parked. There are several souvenir shops to browse and some cafes to relax in along the way. Here are some pictures I took of our walk.

On the right is Mayu and Ulan.

My first time ever to the All-Japan Model Hobby Show!
