Video game "chirashi" flyers

March 2014

Recently, I have been collecting these "chrashi" video game advertisement flyers on YAJ. Most of these are for Sega Saturn games. These are small, A4 size mini posters that were advertisements for upcoming video games.

Twinkle Star Sprites! This was the first one I bought, and my actively purchasing these chirashi thus began. I love this shmup game, and I love the bright colors. I was actually looking for a full-sized poster for this game, and found this instead. This was the beginning of my chirashi collection!

Cotton 2 is a fun shmup. A full-size poster of Cotton Boomerang for the Saturn adorns my wall, yet I still have yet to own that game. Very beautiful colors in this game.

Game Tengoku is another fun, colorful shmup.

I do not own Guardian Heroes for the Saturn yet, but I have played it. This was an "oh, what the heck" purchase for me.

Gotta love the obvious homage to Blade Runner in the artwork for Night Strikers SS.

Metal Black is on the back side of Night Strikers (both games are from Taito).

Langrisser IV. The Langrisser series is famous for Satoshi Urushihara's character designs.

Donpachi is great, but I'm fonder of its sequel, Dodonpachi.

Gunbird was released for the Saturn and Playstation. Atlus released more shmups for the Saturn than the Playstation, though. I played this arcade game at a place called Laser Quest, which was an indoor laser light gun tournament place. I fell in love with this game, and when I found out it was available on the Saturn as an import as well as lots of other great shmups and other 2D games, I knew that I had to own a Saturn! The Playstation version was eventually ported in English as "Mobile Light Force" with a ridiculous-looking, non-sequitir cover that looked more like Charlie's Angels than Gunbird. Redonk.

Shippuu Mahou Daisakusen is known as Kingdom Grand Prix in English.

Purikura Daisakusen is a colorful, cute shooting game that has nothing to do with purikura.

Magical Drop 3.

Puyo Puyo CD for the PC Engine.

I bought this chirashi of Segata Sanshiro for my friend Lou.

Sengoku Blade! I didn't know anything about this game when I first saw it for sale, brand new, for only 1,000 yen when I first moved to Himeji in 2000 and started buying lots of cheap Saturn games on clearance. The big, huge boobs scared me away. It wasn't until several years later that I learned that this is a great game.

This chirashi for Bulk Slash is actually smaller than the regular A4 size ones. This is such a fun game.

Wachen Roder is a steampunk SRPG. Character designs are by Murata Range.

I first played X-Men vs. Street Fighter at a Peter Piper Pizza location. Peter Piper Pizza is (was?) a pizza/game arcade/play center franchise based in Phoenix, AZ.

The pervy Steam Hearts was toned down a bit from the PC Engine version, and the gameplay was improved.

Langrisser: Dramatic Edition is a reissue of the first two Langrisser games on the Saturn.

Asuka 120% is a fun, manic fighting game on the Saturn.

Here's a Super Famicom chirashi, for the famous Tales of Phantasia RPG. It's the game that started the Tales franchise, and was the first SFC game to feature an intro melody with vocals.

Madou Monogatari for the Megadrive. This RPG series is the original games from which the Puyo Puyo characters come from. I don't know why, but every Madou Monogatari game goes for a very high price, regardless of which system it's on. Thus, I do not own a single one.

Burning Rangers on the Saturn is so freaking cool.

Variable Geo is the all-female waitress fighting game series. Super VG is the tame version for the SFC. Here is my review of it on my Super Famicom page.

Advanced VG is a fairly risque game in the Variable Geo series, gaining an 18+ rating.

This Saturn game is beautiful. It's a precursor to the Vanillaware games like Odin Sphere.

Legendary game developer Treasure is well-known for making quirky games. The Saturn version of Silhouette Mirage is superior to the Playstation version, and Working Designs had to mess with the game's programming for the localized English port.

Tecmo's first Dead or Alive game on the Dreamcast. Arguably better than the Playstation version.

King of Fighters Dream Match 1999 on the Dreamcast.

Langrisser V on the Saturn.

While the Devil Hunter Yohko games on the PC Engine were text adventure games, this one for the Megadrive is a nice action platformer game. Chicks with swords are cool.

Although the Valis games on the PC Engine are better, they are still fun on the Megadrive. I love the '80s character designs. Chicks with swords wearing bikini armor are even cooler!

Since this Megadrive game goes for a ridonkulous amount of money, it was actually re-released for the Megadrive by Masaya in 2019. It was an Amazon exclusive and I got it.

I have to admit that Assault Suits Leynons for the Super Famicom ("Cybernator" in North America) is a far better game. After playing that game so much, playing Assault Suits Leynos pales in comparison. Assault Suits Leynons 2 on the Saturn, however is a fantastic sequel.

A great Psikyo shoot-em-up (\81hshmup\81h) inspired by Capcom's 1942/1943, but it features two player simultaneous gameplay. Although besides flying a P-38, you can also fly a Zero, Spitfire, Messerschmidt, and a Shinden.

This time it's Soukyuu Gurentai, a great Saturn shmup that was later released on the Playstation with a new ship to choose from.

Sakura Taisen, aka Sakura Wars, on the Saturn.

Ranma 1/2: Gekitou Hen on the Super Famicom

Alright, this one is not my own. I found this on Tumblr and just had to add it to this gallery. I love this game, and it's one of the first PC Engine games I bought the day I bought a Turbo Duo in Osaka in October 2001.

I scored a set lot of Irem arcade flyers: three R-Types and Gallop. This is the first R-Type.

R-Type 2.

R-Type Leo, my favorite R-Type game.

Armed Police Gallop by Irem. I love the Blade Runner vibes this artwork gives!

Like, oh my gosh. Read the next thingy now, please.
