Summer Wonder Festival 2013

July 2013

I visited the Summer Wonder Festival again this year, with my friend Yasu. It was his first time to attend a Wonder Festival, aka "Wonfes." He frequently visits the Comic Market (aka "Comiket"), and he commented that the atmosphere of Wonfes was a bit different than Comiket. He said that the pace is more relaxed, it's quieter, and the attendees are more mature.

Wonder Festival is put on by Kaiyodo twice a year, in winter (February) and summer (July). While the Shizuoka Hobby Show is put on by Tamiya and focuses mostly on plastic models, Wonfes focuses mostly on doujin garage kits and anime figures.

First of all, here are some cosplayers! Here are Yatterman 1 and 2.

Left: Devil Hunter Yohko. Right: Deedlit from Record of Lodoss War!

Left: No idea what these space ships are from, but they look cool. Right: The Thing!

Left: Macross Valkyries. Right: SD Ingrams facing off with mini robots, as seen in the first Patlabor movie.

Alien Chestburster and Terminator.

Left: Blade Walkers. Because really, you shouldn't run with sharp objects such as blades in your hands, right? These are 1:10 scale resin kits of Deckard and Gaff.

Left: Metal Gear. Right: A really cool Mospeada toy I'd never seen before.

Briarios from Appleseed.

Here are two garage kits of Pirotess from Record of Lodoss War. The one on the left looks nicer, in my opinion.

Left: A garage kit of A-ko from Project A-ko. I was tempted to buy this. Right: Saber, beautiful as always.

Future Boy Conan stuff!

Left: From Metal Gear, is that Solid Snake, or his father? I've lost track of this series. I've only played the first MGS game. Right: Black Rock Shooter, the DFC beauty. Unfortunately, this picture was a bit blurry.

Left: Madoka Magica. Right: Cardcaptor Sakura.

Left: Lynn Minmay from Macross. But you didn't need me to tell you that, right? RIGHT? Left: The Lovely Angel from Dirty Pair. I bought this star ship garage kit for 4,000 yen. However, the guys told me that it is still unfinished, so they will mail it to me later.

The same guys also made several Zentraedi ships from Macross.

Garage kits of Crusher Joe star ships. The official Crusher Joe plastic models are very old and fetch a high price, so it's nice to see kits of these ships.

Left: Here is the character from Namco's Legend of Valkyrie video game. Right: I'm not sure what she is from, but the rule of thumb is that girls with swords are cool.

Left: Here's a garage kit of the Blade Runner Spinner. It's a larger scale than Fujimi's 1:32 plastic model. Right: The badass Mad Max Interceptor.

Shane Rimmer of Thunderbirds and Star Wars fame was there, sigining autographs.

Left: Lyrical Nanoha. Right: I don't know this character, but again, girls with swords kick ass.

The fairy girl is so cool! So is Saber!

Left: Cobra is such a badass. Right: I think that's the girl from Slayers.

I understand that the Famicom Athena game wasn't very good, but it sure has a cult following.

This is Anette from the Megadrive game, El Viento (as well as Anette Futatabi for the Mega CD).

Left: Another cool girl with a sword, Asuna from Sword Arts Online. Right: Here's a sword girl that's a blast of anime nostalgia: Leda: The Fantastic Adventure of Yohko!

Left: More love for Athena. Right: Can't get enough of Super Sugar Crisp... AND girls with swords!

Left: This is a life-sized mecha that can be worn. Wow! Right: The Antares star fighter from the Dreamcast shmup, Border Down.

Right: Here you can see the parts of the kit.

They also had the ship from Xevious.

Appleseed.

I don't know what these are from.

Cammy from Street Fighter II.

Megaman figures and Evangelion cat girl figures.

Left: Beautiful DFC girl in a bikini. Right: Ships from Ketsui!

More Ketsui ships.

Left: Hey, it's that guy from that show. Oh wait, no it's not. Right: Some Project Diva character (I don't think it's Hatsune Miku).

Left: June from Gatchaman. Right: a giant Flatwoods inflatable monster! For only 40,000 yen, you can put this in your front yard at Christmastime instead of stupid Santa crap!

The legendary Flatwoods Monster has made appearances in pop culture, ranging from Uglydolls to the 2nd level boss in Sega's Space Harrier II game.

Etna from Disgaea: my favorite DFC character.

Misa Hayase!

Minmay and Saber!

Alien!

Left: Give Uncle Scrotor a HUG! Right: Cobra is so cool.

Right: Tron!

Here are several Leiji Matsumoto dolls. Right: Maetel and Emeraldas. Left: Real men play with Captain Harlock dolls!

Travel in style with Space Adventure Cobra luggage!

A huge K-On! button.
