Read about the music I've been listening to.So there is something very troubling with the idea of an entire generation of people growing up with the Internet. Before then, people didn't really communicate with each other to the same intensity and frequency as they do now. Back then, if you isulted someone to their face, you may have to deal with the consequences of your actions, particularly if they decide to punch your teeth out for mouthing off. But now we have a huge chunk of society who are complete cowards, who feel the need to denigrate others and treat them with hostility in the comfort of their chair in front of the computer, without fear of reprucussions for being a complete ass.
The English-speaking world does not hold a monopoly on this behavior. I have encountered plenty of assholes in Japan who do this as well. They can be extremely racist, hostile, offensive, and completely bellicose in their words. Many of them belong to the far-right wing fascist fringe of the Japanese political spectrum. In other words, people who go right along with the uyoku: the morons who drive around in big black vans (recently they've been favoring white vans for some reason), stand atop them, and shout out nonsense about "reclaiming the lost territories of Korea and Vietnam" and all that sort of crap. These people on the Net are extremely hostile towards foreigners (and Americans in particular) online, except the average individual hasn't the guts to say anything of the sorts to any of us in-person. These people actually believe that Japanese soldiers were in Korea and China minding their own business, just looking out for everyone's best interests, which just happened to coincide with Japan's best interests at the time. Because much of the footage in the war propaganda film used to inform people of what was happening with the Nanking Massacre was doctored due to a lack of filmed evidence of the actions of the Japanese army, these guys think that it never happened at all, and that it was all invented by the Chinese to make Japan look bad. They think that the Japanese army was in China and Korea to help, but poor old Japan was betrayed by these terrible countries. They sincerely believe that all of the photos of the Nanking Massacre were doctored, that the Japanese army did not abuse their P.O.W.s at all (which shows a complete lack of knowledge of their own country's history and the bushido code), that the Bataan Death March was nothing more than a nature walk in which the P.O.W.s were swimming and reclining and having a wonderful time, Korean "comfort women" never existed, and that Unit 731 never existed. They lash out at any Japanese person who believes that their country owes Korea and China an apology.
Well, I have recently encountered one Japanese asshole on YouTube, who goes by the name Novajoke. Think of that one character in that dumb cartoon Drawn Together who kept repeating ad nauseam, "I'm on a never-ending quest to save my girlfriend!" Only in this guy's case, it's "I'm on a never-ending quest to expose parasite gaijin for the cockroaches they truly are!"
To truly describe this guy, I must mention a bit about a company called Nova. In case you don't already know, Nova was a terrible eikaiwa (English conversation school) that excelled at hiring inept morons to come to Japan and teach. Nova was a very easy way for people to live in Japan, particularly because people didn't even need to know their ass from their elbow to be able to teach English. Places like Nova would hire some decent people, for sure, but they also had quite a reputation for hiring clowns. The company made some bad decisions, like making it so that their students could just show up for any class at any time they felt like it, causing mass confusion, students being turned away, and people getting very upset about paying for already overpriced classes that they were unable to attend. I think there was also some cocaine use and teachers fraternizing with their students outside of class as well. Nova claimed bankruptcy, and since they were one of the largest eikaiwa schools in Japan, there were suddenly a lot of teachers out of work and not receiving their final paychecks. They were claiming unemployment benefits, and the right-wing Japanese Nationalists were getting furious about this. Well, even if they were stooges, the taxes they paid into the system with their own tax money, and this entitled them to obtain unemployment pay.
So now there's a Japanese word I should introduce you to: zuzushii. Imagine you're in your car and you see road work ahead, and the orange road cones are forcing everyone to merge into one lane. The polite people merge as soon as possible, so as to prevent a traffic jam, but then there are other people who will accelerate to go as far as possible and them move over, because they can't be bothered to wait in line like everyone else. That is what it means to be zuzushii. One of the nice things about Japanese society is that they tend to be rather mild-mannered and respectful of others. Then imagine the stereotypical "ugly American" who will not hesitate to take advantage of this for their own personal gain. The "ugly American" is why the rest of the world doesn't seem to think much of them, but the "ugly American" is more likely to just flip them the middle finger and think that everyone else has a problem but themselves.
I have witnessed the zuzushii ugly American first-hand in Japan several times. Whether it is American military servicemen or retarded English teachers working for the JET or eikaiwa schools, their behavior is often akin to chimpanzees. Their inability to treat others with respect or to find appropriate outlets to deal with culture shock certainly makes the rest of us look badly. A year or so after I moved from Himeji to Arizona, I visited the city with my wife and mom-in-law. As we were walking along the shopping arcade, I spotted these two Americans pedaling their bicycles quickly up to random people, screeching their brakes in front of them, and shouting in their faces. I was so bewildered at this aberrant behavior that when they did the same to my mom, I didn't respond at all. Those guys thought that since they can get away with that sort of crap in Japan, they may as well do it. Incapable of dealing with their culture shock in a more mature manner, their behavior is more akin to chimpanzees. I have no idea if these imbeciles were teachers on the same Himeji teaching program I was once on, or if they were working for the local Nova or some other eikaiwa. They apparently had nothing better to do on their Saturday afternoon but to behave like total cretins.
But, there are far worse. Last April I interviewed for a teaching job in Japan with a company called Altia Central. My interviewer was a girl named Rachel and I met her at a Starbucks cafe in Beverly Hills. I have heard great things about this company, and they actually gave me a job offer, with a company car and everything. I ended up turning them down when a company offered me a job sooner, although I am sure I would've been treated much better at Altia. Anyhow, it was the best interview I've hever had. Very relaxed, personal, and conversational. Rachel told me of her first experience in Japan, with a homestay program in college. There were a couple of guys who went along on the homestay who did not respect Japanese culture or people at all, and they only came because they thought they could score with some chicks or something. She told me that it was a small town, and these two clowns managed to make an enemy of the entire town. Not only this, but naturally they gave the whole group a bad reputation. One time, they had attempted to shoplift a bottle of alcohol from a convenience store, but on the way out, it slipped out from underneath one of their shirts, fell to the floor, and broke. They ran off. Another time, they'd come home late at night after drinking at a bar, and when they arrived, they realized they did not have enough money to pay the taxi driver. So, one of them snuck into their host family's house and stole money from the family to pay the taxi. I have no idea why those two jerks weren't sent on a plane home after the way they treated everyone.
So anyhow, gaijin in Japan can be real apes, and that really fuels the fires of anti-immigrant bigotry in Japan. This brings me back to what I was about to say about this guy called Novajoke on YouTube. This one guy had uploaded a video a couple years back, a supposed "PSA," warning people not to come to Japan to teach because supposedly there are no jobs to be found. I think he had worked for Geos for about seven years or so and found himself out of a job. I tried watching his other videos, but his "Japanese language lessons" were terrible and full of errors, and his pronunciation was bad. The other videos were about witchcraft or something stupid like that, so there weren't many videos of his about Japan. because he had problems finding employment, he was saying in the video that teaching jobs in Japan are vanishing everywhere, and he was warning people to not bother coming to Japan for work. Well, I posted a comment to the video, disagreeing with him. I really don't want to even link to the guy's video, but here it is. Really, don't watch it though, because he doesn't deserve the number of views for the video. He's even turned off voting because most people would give the video thumbs down. So anyhow, here's how the conversation went:

I also had the qualifications to become a stock broker, which gave me the insight to determine the direction of an economy in a particular sector. | Actually, there is one teacher here I know from the Philippines. He speaks English perfectly, to the point where I couldn't even tell he was from there. I don't know if he's a good teacher, but his language skills are there. I've never met an Indian who didn't have an accent, though. In fact, I replaced an Indian who quit suddenly. From what I could tell, he wasn't a good teacher, and not well-liked. IMHO, Indians in general don't speak English well and shouldn't teach here. stevethefishdotnet |

Here's where he really shows his ignorance, pushing this issue like this. I won't mention any specific company names, but I have handled IT project finances for Fortune 100 companies and I have seen the bill rates of these outsourced resources. One company I worked at fired the majority of their project managers and replaced them with remote PMs in Argentina and Brazil. It would take 10 of these resources to do the work of one American project manager, but the company didn't care because they were still coming out ahead by saving money. It all boils down to making the board of directors happy and not giving a shit about fully capable Americans losing their jobs. |
| Because for a call center, you can pay an American $12 an hour, or pay an Indian $2 an hour. I have until this point confounded him every time, and I just don't seem to conform to his limited stereotype of what an English teacher in Japan is like. He has tried to second guess me and has been proven wrong each time, so he resorts to this. I already told him that I've taught English to immigrants (both legal and illegal), and he still continues to insult my previous work experience. He also criticizes America for having Spanish everywhere, yet he obviously hasn't taken a look at his own country, where train station names are listed in English, the stops are announced on the trains in English, and bank ATMs are also in English. So now, I am completely satisfied with letting this turdpole respond with the last resort. I saw a response from him in my YouTube inbox, but I deleted it without reading it. I am ready to just let him have the last word, since there really is no use in arguing with a psychotic moron with a chemical imbalance. It's not worth the stress. I had already decided to give up on arguing with him long before I actually did, but it was just too amusing how he just automatically lumped me into the category of the type of rude, zuzushii gaijin who wipes his ass all over Japan, merely because I don't see the point in having non-native English teachers fill the roles that are currently available, unless they have truly mastered the language. Otherwise, they may as well just employ Japanese people as English teachers (and of course they already do) since there really is no difference. His point that a Japanese face makes students here more comfortable indicates that he is missing a crucial point to having people of different ethnicities come to Japan: to break down the barrier between Japanese and foreigners. Having people like me teach school children and play with themhelps to soften the image of foreigners, to help eliminate fears and to help them be more comfortable with people outside of their ethnicity and nationality. Moreover, the way he denigrates appliance salespeople, car salespeople (although they tend to be sleazy jocks, at least in my opinion), and teachers speaks volumes to how big of a snob he is, and how he places such an emphasis on making money shows how truly unhappy he is in life. Making the money I made as a project coordinator for big companies cannot replace the truly incredible experience I am having as an English teacher at elementary schools, and making the kids laugh and enjoy their studies.
Moreover, Novajoke is living proof that he should have been educated by a native English speaker. His mistakes are too many in his writing(although he is far more intelligible than a typical 14 year old American kid these days, I must admit), yet he boats how he can communicate in English. He commonly uses the word "Engrish," completely failing to realize that the term "Engrish" is used to describe the mistake-ridden English as written by people in Asia and such. This guy has nothing better to do than lash out at people, stereotype them, and judge them. He's pathetic. He really needs to just relax. Maybe he's tried getting teaching jobs, but was turned down. I think that considering how angry and bellicose he is, he must be a sexually frustrated twerp. Perhaps he hates gaijin eikaiwa teachers so much because he's jealous that they seem to find girls easily in Japan, and the closest he can get to female interaction is playing Tokimeki Memorial. Maybe he could be charming, if he didn't spend all of his free time crusading against gaijin on YouTube (and probably 2ch as well).

So, I've pretty much had enough with Novajoke. It's useless to convince him of his prejudices and logical fallacies. He's only making a fool of himself, and refuses to realize how incredibly stupid he is. He's assumed that I made $12/hr at a call center, a burger flipper, a car dealer, a Liberal Democrat, a divorcee, impotent, and a fornicator (not sure how being impotent and a fornicator can go together, but it just shows how desperate he is to categorize me).
